Do you ever feel like a complete failure because you know what to do...you just don't do it? Well before you go judging and criticizing yourself I want you to know you are not alone. In fact, it makes complete sense. Making new habits or reinstating previous good habits takes time, repetition, dedication, trial and error. We need to strengthen that good old "habit muscle".
January is finally over and you may find that you need to dig a little deeper (or a lot deeper) to stay motivated when it comes to exercising and staying on track. Cold days can make you want to curl up in bed wearing fleecy pyjamas, covered in toasty blankets with a big cup of camomile tea (with a splash of cashew milk for me please). Ahhh that sounds nice.
And it is nice.. for a couple days, but if you are like me, a few too many days of inactivity can make you feel tired and sloth like. Getting in daily activity despite the chilly weather is important for your physical and mental health. How can you get motivated??? MUSIC. I find nothing more motivating then an awesome playlist or a juicy podcast.
As a group fitness instructor I tend to think classes are the best motivation, but I know not everyone is a class person and with crazy winter weather it isn't always possible to make it into the gym. So next time there is a snow day pull out these playlist and get moving.
Has this ever happened to you? You are feeling good, feeling pretty damn fit and thinking that maybe all this clean eating and active living is finally starting to pay off! And then..dun dun dun... you weight yourself. The numbers haven't gone down or even worse... they have gone up!!! You instantly start to feel panicked. Are you living in a fantasy world where you are actually getting bigger and bigger each day and you don't even know it?!
Cue a mental meltdown and all your worries and negative thoughts spiralling out of control aaaaahhhhhhhhhhh...... and scene, your day is ruined.
Ok, calm down. I am sorry if you were triggered there, but I am here to tell you something I want you to remember forever....IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW MUCH YOU WEIGHT. So stop worrying about it.
Teaching Group Fitness is an amazing gift in my life that I am forever grateful for. It got me through so many different parts of my life. I started teaching Body Flow in 2006 as a single girl who wasn't really sure where my career (or life in general) was going. I instantly fell in love with the connection group exercise provided.
I was listening to the late Dr. Wayne Dyer's Podcast the other day (he passed away in 2015, if you don't know who he is, please look him up, he shares many powerful messages). When describing his current wellness routine at then 70+ years old, he referred to the routine as a "Radical Wellness" plan. I really connected with this statement, this bold commitment. I admired his willingness to go to extremes and jump in with both feet. Sometimes we need to get real and honest with ourselves. Change is challenging and sometimes means pushing outside of your comfort zone.
Instead of trying to escape and hide from the kids in order to workout at the cottage, I decided to actually include them! I was pleasantly surprised. I played fun music and they were so proud to show me how strong, flexible or balanced they were. I got in a good workout too, we did lots of pushups, leg lifts, planks and mountain climbers.
