My top 3 Tips to avoid sugar cravings:
Today is Halloween and I see those little mini candy bars everywhere. As a personal trainer and nutrition coach I have heard lots of Halloween confessionals and regrets over the years (some of those regrets have been my own). I don't want you to have to white knuckle it, suffer and feel guilty about it. I have listed my top 3 tips to do yourself a favour and not get caught in the cycle of sugar addiction and cravings. Plus I added an amazing sweet treat below!
1-Don't go hungry. This is my golden rule. Before restaurants, baby showers, kid's birthday parties, you name it, I always make sure I have had a healthy meal or smoothie earlier. I don't want to be starving walking towards candy, cake or any food that is not nutrient dense (its like walking into a lion's den). Why put yourself through that? If you are hungry you are more likely to eat whatever is available. Before the trick or treating starts make sure you treat yourself to a healthy balanced meal or smoothie including greens, carbs, fats and proteins, that way you won't be left hungry and tempted. We are only human so do yourself a favour.
2-Get enough sleep and manage stress. Make sure you are taking care of the yourself mentally and physically through exercise, sleep, and a healthy diet. The more depleted, tired or stressed we become the more we will crave sugar. Our body is searching for that boost of serotonin or quick energy. You may notice the day after a terrible sleep you crave sugar or carbs. That is your body searching for a quick and easy boost. You will seriously reduce those sugar cravings if you take care of your sleep and stress (its good for weight loss and hormonal balance too).
3-Mind your mind. Sometimes the idea of restriction or not being able to have something can be triggering and actually lead to eating more of the foods you are trying to avoid. Remember, you are the boss of you. You decide what goes in your body and what feels right. Have a mental check-in with yourself and make your own choices. If you really want it, go ahead and have it if you think that is best for you.
Natures Chocolate Bar: The easiest, tastiest sweet Snack.
-Take a couple Medjool dates (They sell them at costco), slice them down the middle and remove the pit.
-Take 1 tablespoons peanut butter or whatever nut butter you like and spread it inside the dates.
It is soooo good! You avoid all the processed junk that is inside regular candy, plus you get some fibre and healthy fats.
